Tom Crean and Son Painting Contractors were commissioned to clean and paint several 100 FT fuel and water tanks at Tynagh Energy Power Plant. This project involved working at heights and importantly ATEX areas, the most challenging aspect was access to specific work zones. Prior to commencement, Tynagh Energy were presented with a comprehensive scope of works detailing our Management Strategy for the overall project, with a strong emphasis on Health & Safety, Lifting and Equipment Plans and the specialist cleaning and application of advanced industrial coatings.

Scope of Works

ATEX areas of work were zoned with control measures to ensure safe works at all times. Logistically the project proved complex and required the hiring of two cranes over a two-day period to crane plant and equipment down into 60FT diesel bunds. Once the plant and equipment were in situ, works commenced with the degreasing of tanks using a specialist marine biological cleaning agent to remove the build-up of dirt and grime. Tanks in designated Atex zones were then high pressure washed. Hand sanding was utilised in the removal of rust, which was then spot primed, fully primed with several topcoats of paint applied. Mechanical abrasion (sandblasting) was applied to tanks external to ATEX zones. Rust was grinded down, tanks were then spot primed, fully primed and several topcoats of paint applied.

Application of specialist industrial coatings, the company chose Temabond ST 200 & 300 primers, offering a protective system with high film build properties and excellent adhesion to blast cleaned or hand prepared steel. This paint can also penetrate rust and adhere to the underlying steel surface, effectively preventing further corrosion. ST 200 & 300 also offer good chemical and abrasion resistance. As high-solid products, the paint has lower VOC emissions than conventional epoxy paints.

Temadur 20 & 50 were employed as topcoats. These highly durable non-chalking polyurethane paints with their anti-corrosion pigmentation offer excellent gloss and colour retention. These paints are also highly resistant to weathering and abrasion, making them the right choice for Tynagh Energy Power Plant.

Quality Control
A critical element of our Management Strategy is our quality control commitment to our clients. Tom Crean and Son Painting Contractors employed an independent paint inspection company, Paint Inspection Ireland to undertake an audit of pre and post works, to verify quality of works. The following testimonial outlines the audit findings at Tynagh Energy Power Plant;

This project was successfully delivered on time, on budget, zero incidents and to the stringent quality standards as set by Tynagh Energy Power Plant and as inspected by Paint Inspection Ireland. To view further examples of our work in this area, please visit
